Two Former Gas Station Sites Will Become Parks

Two former gas stations will be turned into parks thanks to fund-raising efforts of Corona del Mar resident Jim Thompson.

The City Council on Monday approved plans for the two parks, which are on opposite sides of Newport Boulevard near Via Lido, at the entrance to the Balboa Peninsula.

Thompson came up with the idea of turning the two vacant plots into parks. He raised $230,000 to buy the land, which he turned over to the city.

The sites will be known as Balboa Peninsula Gateway Park and Lido Village Gateway Park.

The city estimated that it will spend $225,000 to $275,000 landscaping the two pieces of land.

Both should be completed by the end of the year.
