College Arts Teacher to Chair County Panel

Gerald Scheib, chairman of the Arts and Letters Department at Mission College, has been elected chairman of the Los Angeles County Art Education Council.

Scheib will serve a one-year term as head of the council, which oversees the establishment of state Department of Education guidelines for training art educators, said Ina Yates, a college spokeswoman.

The council is made up of 60 members representing private and public colleges and universities in L.A. County, Yates said.

Scheib has been a Mission College art teacher since 1977, Yates said. He is also a past president of the college’s Academic Senate, a board that plays a major role in college governance.

The Sylmar resident was selected Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator for 1994-95 by the California Art Education Assn., Yates said. He has been a member of the association for 33 years and served as the group’s president in 1992.

Also in 1992, Scheib was among a group of educators selected by the state Department of Education to analyze recommendations for “Strengthening the Arts in California Schools: A Design for the Future,” a study funded jointly by the Department of Education and the Getty Center for Education in the Arts, Yates said.
