Lancaster Falls in Bottom of 9th

Brian Fitzgerald yielded a two-out ninth-inning RBI double and Lancaster (3-6) fell to its fourth consecutive defeat Friday night, 6-5, to host Rancho Cucamonga.

Left-handed pitcher Jim Parque, who played for Crescenta Valley High and UCLA, made a rapid rise through the Chicago White Sox system after being drafted in the second round in June. Parque allowed 38 hits and struck out 81 in 73 innings while splitting time between double-A and triple-A last season. Parque, 22, 5-foot-10 and 166 pounds, is beginning the season at triple-A Calgary of the Pacific Coast League, but probably will be promoted to the White Sox should either Scott Eyre or Mike Sirotka falter as a starter. In spring training, Parque was 2-0 and opposing batters hit only .242 against him. He was less successful in his first start for Calgary on Thursday, allowing four earned runs in five innings and receiving no decision. Parque gave up two home runs, struck out three and walked three. . . . Right-handed pitcher Bob Scanlon, who played at Harvard-Westlake High, was promoted Friday from triple-A New Orleans to the Houston Astros and pitched in relief Friday night against the Dodgers.
