A’s Sign Giambi Through 2001
Oakland first baseman Jason Giambi, who finally has a position he can call his own, now has the added security of a long-term contract.
On Saturday the A’s signed Giambi, 27, to a three-year deal at undisclosed terms that puts him under contract through the 2001 season.
Giambi, hitting a team-high .406, has started all eight games at first base for Oakland this season after playing five positions in 1996 and three in 1997. He became the full-time first baseman after the departure of Mark McGwire, who was traded to St. Louis last summer.
