Homeowners Group Holds Off on Gate Plan

After months of debate, a homeowners association has withdrawn a proposal to turn the Village San Juan neighborhood into a gated community.

A majority of the 691 residents in the neighborhood supported a security gated entrance at Village Road to enhance their property values and deter crime, according to a survey conducted by the San Juan Village Homeowners Assn.

But other neighbors opposed the gate, contending it would unduly raise community dues and create traffic problems.

The homeowners association will resubmit plans once it determines the total costs of operating the gate, said Sue Cook, property manager.

“We postponed it, but our homeowners still want the gate,” she said.

Any gate plan will require the city to transfer its ownership of Village Road to the homeowners association. But first, the association must show the city proof that at least 75% of homeowners want the gate.
