Severyn Finally Reaches His Goal

Forgive Duck tough guy Brent Severyn for pumping his fist in celebration of his first goal of the season Monday against the Colorado Avalanche, his old team.

He doesn’t score goals all that often, so he tends to relish every last one. It had nothing to do with settling an old score against his former teammates.

“Never, ever have I gone a whole season without a goal,” said Severyn, who had nine to go with 775 penalty minutes in 295 NHL games before Wednesday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers. “It was getting down to the wire there, down to the nitty gritty. I was getting nervous.”

Scoring against future Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy merely made it all the sweeter, he quickly added.

“Oh, it might come up if I see him this summer,” Severyn said, throwing back his head in laughter.

Defenseman Doug Houda entertained his teammates by pretending to water ski behind the Zamboni before the morning skate. Houda took a few turns around the ice, hoping over imaginary waves and hot-dogging on one ski, er, skate.

When Houda was finished, the Ducks tapped their sticks on the ice in appreciation.
