2 Teenagers Escape From Probation Camp

Two teenage prisoners walked away from a juvenile probation camp Wednesday night, but authorities said the boys are not considered to be dangerous.

The youths escaped from Camp Scutter, a military-style program run by the Los Angeles County Probation Department, between 6:45 and 8 p.m., according to Sgt. Bob Galarneau of the Sheriff’s Department.

“The camp itself is not a secure facility like our jails,” Galarneau said. “They just walked away. It’s a boot-camp-type program, so it’s based on the honor system.”

One of the boys, a 15-year-old from Huntington Park, was convicted of burglarizing his aunt’s house, Galarneau said. The other, also 15, is from Norwalk and was convicted for hijacking a bicycle, he said.

Both were last seen wearing the brown pants and khaki shirts issued to the prisoners. Because they are juveniles their names were not released.

“These guys are on the immature side,” Galarneau said. “They are not dangerous or sophisticated. They’re probably just a couple of scared kids.”
