Velarde Feeling Some Pain in Elbow

Share

Second baseman Randy Velarde suffered a setback in his attempt to return from last year’s elbow surgery.

He worked out at Edison Field while the Angels were on the road but had stiffness and pain in his elbow Sunday morning.

“You got to be careful,” Velarde said. “When you’re feeling good, you want to push it. But you have to wait until the next day to see where you’re at. I was going a little too fast, a little too quick.”

He was back at it Thursday afternoon. Velarde hit and threw from second base before being examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum.

“We’ll wait and see what the doctor says before we decide the next step,” Manager Terry Collins said. “Randy took 50 swings and made 65-70 throws, including some double plays.”

Shigetoshi Hasegawa, who was struck on the right forearm by Bernie Williams’ line drive Wednesday, said he will be able to pitch by Friday or Saturday. Hasegawa iced the arm on the flight home and played catch without significant pain. “I feel fine,” Hasegawa said. “After I throw 100 pitches, it might get a little sore.”

The Angels put reserve infielder Craig Shipley on the 15-day disabled list because of an irritation of a nerve in his right arm. Pitcher Rich Robertson was recalled from Vancouver. . . . First baseman Chris Pritchett was activated from the disabled list and optioned to triple-A Vancouver . . . Vanessa Greene, wife of catcher Todd Greene, gave birth to a son, Jacob, early Thursday morning. Mother and son are doing fine, father is still on the disabled list.

Dennis Springer returned to Anaheim on Thursday as a member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was 14-15 in two seasons with the Angels after spending nine seasons in the minor leagues.

Springer is 1-1 as the Devil Rays’ No. 5 starter and is secure on a major league roster for the first time in his career.
