Stephenson, Lankford Injured
Philadelphia pitcher Garrett Stephenson limped off the field in the third inning of Friday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals after getting spiked on the right heel while covering first base.
Stephenson raced to cover the bag on Willie McGee’s infield chopper and replays showed McGee clipped the heel trying to leg out a hit.
After consulting with the team trainer, Stephenson bounced one warmup pitch before he limped off.
Stephenson, who entered the game with an 0-1 record and a 7.59 ERA, was replaced by Matt Whiteside with the game tied, 1-1, and runners on second and third with one out.
Stephenson was the second player injured in the game. Cardinal center fielder and cleanup hitter Ray Lankford left as a precautionary measure with a tight left hamstring after doubling in the first inning. McGee replaced Lankford.
Manager Tony La Russa left the dugout to talk with Lankford near first base after the third out of the inning. Lankford then walked off the field, and touched his left hamstring in the dugout.
