Councilman Thomas R. Saltarelli was chosen unanimously by his colleagues Monday to serve as mayor for 1998, succeeding Jeffery M. Thomas in the post.

Saltarelli, a real estate attorney, was first elected to the council in 1992 and served a previous term as mayor from April 1994 to April 1995.

Saltarelli said the upcoming closure of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Facility and a new library will be among his priorities.

“We’re finally back into aggressively moving forward with the base closure process, and that presents many opportunities and problems for us to deal with,” he said.

“But we’re optimistic that we’ll have a great project when it is all completed.”

The city plans to convert the Marine base property, which is scheduled to close next year, into a mixture of housing, commercial businesses, a school and parks.

The mayor’s job, which mostly consists of overseeing City Council meetings and representing the city at public functions, rotates annually among the five council members.

Councilwoman Tracy Wills Worley was chosen as mayor pro tem at Monday’s meeting.
