All-star center Jayson Williams’ playing status and starting guard Sam Cassell’s role remained unresolved as the New Jersey Nets opened final preparations Tuesday in Tampa, Fla., for their Eastern Conference playoff series against the Chicago Bulls.

Williams returned to practice and survived a scare when teammate David Vaughn accidentally hit his injured right thumb.

Cassell, who sat out Sunday’s game because of a groin strain, did not practice.

If he also misses practice today, he will be used off the bench in the playoff opener at Chicago on Friday.

Williams, who sat out the last 11 regular-season games after breaking his thumb March 27, took part in a limited workout. The center reported no problems after a 90-minute morning session and insists he will play.

“I’m playing,” Williams said. “It’s over. There’s no doubt.”

However, Net Coach John Calipari said he will review the situation with team physician Dr. Charles Melone before making a final determination.

“If he’s able to play, he will,” Calipari said. “If he’s not, he won’t. I’m not going to throw away the organization’s future for a weekend.”

Center Rony Seikaly, who has been slowed by a bruised right foot, practiced and could be available for limited action.

Charlotte Hornet reserve guard Vernon Maxwell failed again to free himself from a 90-day jail sentence in Houston when State District Judge Jay Burnett denied Maxwell’s request for an appeals bond.

Houston Rocket starting guard Matt Maloney needed stitches in his lower lip after he took an elbow from teammate Brent Price during practice. Maloney is expected to be ready for Thursday’s playoff opener against the Utah Jazz.
