San Diego pitcher Kevin Brown didn’t want to talk after getting ejected from Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs. However, Padre pitching coach Dave Stewart had plenty to say about the umpiring.

Brown was ejected while batting in the fourth inning, and Mickey Morandini and Brant Brown hit solo home runs that helped the Cubs beat the Padres, 5-3.

“In my opinion, there were some things that took place tonight that should not have taken place on the part of the umpire,” Stewart said. “I don’t want to take away from the ballgame--the Cubs played very well tonight. But that was a badly called baseball game.”

“Heck,” Stewart said, “I was as frustrated as he [Brown] was.”

Brown was tossed by plate umpire Joe West while arguing a called strike on the first pitch. The Padres’ pitcher ace had to be restrained, and San Diego Manager Bruce Bochy also was ejected.

“It was a frustrating night,” Bochy said. “He thought the pitches were there and he wasn’t getting them. Joe called them how he saw them and we didn’t agree.

“It was a strange night, a bizarre night,” Bochy said. “Hopefully, we’ll put this behind us.”

Brown refused comment, telling Padre Public Relations Director Glenn Geffner that he had nothing to say.

“Kevin is a competitor, he’s intense. He’s emotional,” Bochy said. “You could tell he’d had enough. Some of his pitches were there and he wasn’t getting them. You hate to lose your starter.”

Bochy went to the mound in the third inning after Brown walked Morandini and Sosa to start the inning. As the manager walked off the field, he said something to West.

“I said, ‘Those pitches look good. I’d like to know where they are,’ ” Bochy said.

But the frustration of the third inning carried over into Brown’s at-bat.

“He’s intense out there but he’s not short-fused, if you know what I mean,” Stewart said. “He goes about his business. This guy is one of the best pitchers in the game. He’s not somebody who has to prove himself to anybody in the league. He was deserving of a better fate than he had tonight.”

Cub catcher Tyler Houston also refused comment on the heated exchange between Brown and West.

“I’m not saying what they said,” Houston said.

Brown (2-1) left with Chicago ahead, 3-1.
