Defeat of Anaheim School Bond Issue

* The failure of the Anaheim bond issue to repair primary schools and build three new schools (April 15) shows a selfish and shortsighted view of the issue by some property owners, who will find that their investments deteriorate along with the infrastructure of the city.

Schools are a part of that infrastructure. The annual cost to the average homeowner would have been less than the cost of a meal for four at a fast-food restaurant.

* I believe the bond for schools was defeated for [several] reasons.

First, the call to get the vote out in my neighborhood was very poor. I was not the only one who had no idea where the polling facility was located.

Information on the school bond was not readily available; several of my neighbors had no idea what the measure really meant to their children or grandchildren.

Almost every person feels a greater need for educational skills in our community, but few understand how this task will be accomplished.

Furthermore, voters are not fully aware of the conditions and lack of learning tools in their neighborhood schools.

Most neighbors I was able to talk to had not been near a school building in years.

The news media need to tour the schools, taking pictures to expose the conditions that the students face every day.

Voters will remember what they see.
