Slain Boy Honored With Tree in Park

Friends and neighbors of Juan Delgado recently planted a tree at Corona Park as a tribute to the slain boy.

The 12-year-old was found dead, dismembered and partially encased in concrete on March 21, four days after he failed to return home from school.

Students at Washington Middle School, where Juan was a sixth-grader, decided to plant the tree as a way to remember him and to help them cope with the tragedy. Neighbors joined the kids in the tree-planting ceremony Saturday. Juan was remembered by his classmates for his love of soccer and big smile.

John Samuel Ghobrial, a one-handed drifter who has been described as a panhandler who often gavecandy to children, has been charged in the boy’s murder. He is being held without bail and is awaiting trial.

Police said Ghobrial acted alone when he allegedly killed the boy.

Donations for the boy’s family are being accepted at California State Bank in La Habra.
