Girl Can Celebrate 1st Birthday at Home
Baby Rosa, the Oxnard infant stricken with flesh-eating bacteria, will be released from the hospital today--her first birthday.
Rosa Olvera arrived at Northridge Hospital Medical Center in critical condition in early July, after surgeons in Ventura County removed muscle tissue and nearly 20% of her skin infected by the bacteria.
At Northridge, Rosa underwent two skin grafts. Doctors said the skin grafts were 100% successful, and she has improved enough to drink regular formula and eat baby food--this after being on life support for weeks.
Rosa’s parents, Miguel Olvera and Rosa Suarez of Oxnard, are now able to hold Rosa without hurting her, a hospital spokesperson said.
“We’re very excited,” said Elva Suarez, Rosa’s great-grandmother. “It’s her first birthday and we want to spend it at home with her.”
