Open-Air Painters in Mission Competition

Share

Professional plein-air artists will compete for cash next week at Mission San Juan Capistrano in the fourth annual Outdoor Professional Painting Competition.

Last year, the competition drew 91 artists who painted more than 300 works with the inspiration of natural light.

“Artists have always been drawn to the beautiful architecture of the mission,” said Pam Ludwig, director of the Joan Irvine Smith Fine Arts Gallery.

“We’re just continuing that tradition.”

On Aug. 15, a panel of judges will award the artists cash prizes totaling $10,000.

The paintings will be on sale from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 16.

While the public is invited to watch the competition, participation is open to California Art Club members only.

The mission is at 31522 Camino Capistrano.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children.
