* Robin Williams, Howie Mandel, Bob Saget and Rodney Dangerfield entertained 500 guests with stand-up comedy at “Cool Comedy--Hot Cuisine” and helped raise $350,000 for the Scleroderma Research Foundation. Sportscaster and news commentator Bob Costas hosted the 10th annual event held July 24 at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. Dinner was created by Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken, chef-owners of Border Grill and co-stars of two Food Network shows. Saget, whose sister died of scleroderma, directed a 1996 TV movie starring Dana Delany that was loosely based on his family’s experiences. Saget presented the Founder’s Awards to businessman and philanthropist Dan Morton; Dan King, general manager of Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel; and volunteer Lisa Schulte. Scleroderma is a fatal disease that affects 500,000 Americans annually.

KABC-AM personality Michael Jackson was honored by the American Cancer Society at “California Spirit XIV,” an annual gourmet gala held July 12 in the garden of Ron Burkle’s “Green Acres” estate in Beverly Hills. Nearly 1,000 guests attended to help raise $470,000 for cancer research, public education, advocacy and services to patients and their families. Jackson has often discussed and promoted cancer-related issues on his show. The event was hosted by chef Wolfgang Puck and his wife, Barbara Lazaroff, and Paramount Pictures’ Sherry Lansing, and chaired by Murray Sommer.
