Transaction Tote Board Is Almost Overloaded

Angel Manager Terry Collins said it was his busiest day as a manager, at least during the regular season.

In: first baseman Chris Pritchett and outfielder Reggie Williams, both recalled from triple-A Vancouver, and relief pitcher Mike Fetters, acquired in a trade with the Oakland A’s.

Out: first baseman Dave Hollins and left fielder Darin Erstad, both went on the 15-day disabled list, and pitcher Jason Dickson, who is being sent to Vancouver to work out his problems.

Pritchett was moved into the starting lineup, as the Angels are short on first basemen. Hollins and Erstad are out and Cecil Fielder was designated for assignment last week.

“I just tried to keep myself ready,” said Pritchett, who was hitting .264 with six home runs and 39 RBIs. “It’s weird how things work out because I never expected this.”

Hollins, who is out because of a inflamed right shoulder, returned to Anaheim on Monday to have an MRI and be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum. The Angels are hoping he will be back soon, but there is concern that won’t be the case.

“He’s a guy who played last season with a torn up knee and never said anything,” Collins said. “Pain is part of the program with him. So if he says it’s bad, then it’s bad.”

The outlook was a little brighter for Erstad, who has been nursing a strained left hamstring. He was put on the disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 4, which means he could be back by the Angels’ next homestand.

“I can’t play my game,” Erstad said. “I can’t go station to station [on the bases]. I need to take the extra base or steal a base. I need to focus on getting healthy.”

Dickson (9-10) was 1-6 with a 8.00 earned-run average in his last eight starts. He will start for Vancouver on Thursday.

“Jason needs to start, not be in the bullpen,” Collin said. “He has to get back his confidence and get back to making pitches.

Besides, there was no room for Dickson in Angels’ bullpen after the team picked up Fetters for a minor league player to be named and cash. Fetters is 1-6 with a 3.99 ERA and five saves this season.

Jack McDowell pitched seven innings for double-A Midland in a rehabilitation start Monday. He threw 98 pitches, giving up three runs and five hits.

McDowell could be back in the Angel rotation later this week. Collins is juggling his starters, as Steve Sparks will start for the Angels on Wednesday on three days rest. Collins hasn’t decided who will start Thursday, but Allen Watson is a possibility.

Ken Hill will probably make a second rehab start for Class-A Cedar Rapids on Thursday.
