Animals’ Fate
Re “Time to End Kids’ Ironic 4-H Projects,” Aug. 9.
There is a wise saying: “Teaching a child not to step on a caterpillar is as valuable to the child as it is to the caterpillar.”
To teach children that their responsibility for an animal’s welfare ends abruptly at the Ventura County Fair auction is unrealistic and the height of irresponsibility.
While I personally choose a vegetarian lifestyle, I hope 4-H leaders will consider that responsibility for the care of 4-H animals raised for slaughter should be extended to include a humane death.
The book “Slaughterhouse” by Gail A. Eisnitz, chief investigator for the Humane Farming Assn., is must reading for anyone who cares about humans or animals.
What are we teaching our children when we ask them to suppress their innate feelings of love and attachment for an animal and sell it for slaughter?
