Report: Enis to End Holdout, Join Bears

Days after vowing never to play for the Chicago Bears, first-round draft choice Curtis Enis reportedly has agreed to a three-year, $5.75-million deal with the team.

Sports Fan Radio Network reported Sunday night that Enis agreed to terms on the three-year deal that includes a $3-million signing bonus. After the third year, the Bears will tender Enis an offer at market value for his position.

They agreed not to tag him as a franchise or transition player, but Enis will be a restricted free agent.

Enis was the fifth player chosen in the draft, but was joined by only defensive end Andre Wadsworth, taken by Arizona with the third pick, and defensive tackle Jason Peter, selected 14th by Carolina, as first-rounders who remained unsigned.

Washington defensive lineman Rich Owens injured a ligament in his left knee and probably is out for the season.

Owens, a 1995 draft pick who had 11 sacks two years ago before tailing off last season, will undergo an MRI today. It’s expected to confirm that Owens has a torn anterior cruciate ligament, ending his season and leaving the Redskins even thinner at one of their weakest positions.

“We need to help ourselves at that position,” Coach Norv Turner said, noting that for most of the second half his left defensive end against the Oilers was Rahmaan Steater, a rookie who played tight end in college.

Tennessee rookie Samari Rolle is still “a little woozy” from the freak collision in practice that sent him to the hospital strapped to a backboard, with no feeling in his left side.

But the cornerback is thankful to know it was no more serious than a bruised spine, and he hopes to be ready to play in the Oilers’ season opener on Sept. 6 at Cincinnati.

“For a minute I thought I’d be a paraplegic. . . . All types of things were going through my mind,” Rolle said.

He collided with receiver Derrick Mason on Friday during their light workout before Saturday’s exhibition against the Washington Redskins.

Jacksonville defensive end Tony Brackens will miss at least the season opener after severely spraining his ankle in an exhibition game against the Giants.

Coach Tom Coughlin said Brackens would be out for the Sept. 6 opener against the Chicago Bears, and possibly beyond.
