Beginning today, the annual Los Angeles African Marketplace and Cultural Faire will begin hosting three weekends of art, music and educational activities celebrating the cultural heritage of Africa and of societies worldwide that have felt African influence.

Now in its 13th year, the festival will include such new additions as a family tennis tournament, a Native American powwow and dance contest, a spoken-word festival, a seniors pavilion and “The Roots of Swing,” featuring swing dance and big-band sounds, said James Burks, the event’s founder.

Music and dance from jazz, blues, reggae, punta, salsa, American, West Indian, European and African traditions will also be performed. The fair will include a “Technology Village,” a soccer tournament and many international foods.
