Griffey Powers Mariners
Three and two were the lucky numbers for Ken Griffey Jr. and the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
Griffey’s streak of 32 at-bats without a homer ended with a shot in the fourth and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Chicago White Sox, 3-2, at Seattle.
Griffey’s two-run blast off John Snyder (4-2) tied the game at two and was his first since Aug. 15 at Chicago.
“I’m on a cut-throat pace,” deadpanned Griffey after hitting only his second homer of August.
Snyder threw a three-hitter in the loss.
Detroit 5, Oakland 4--Seth Greisinger solved eight of the Athletics’ nine hitters, and that was enough.
Jason Giambi hit two home runs and drove in four for the A’s, but the Tigers won at Oakland.
Tony Clark gave the Tigers the lead for good with a two-run double in the third, as they won for the first time in six games.
Boston 5, Minnesota 1--Pedro Martinez and Brad Radke were two of the best pitchers in the majors in 1997. After two meetings in 11 days, however, only one of them is pitching like it now.
Martinez (17-4) pitched six shutout innings and Darren Bragg matched a career-high with four hits as the Red Sox won at Minneapolis.
Martinez has won both starts since his other meeting with Radke.
As for Radke (10-12), he gave up five runs on a season-high 12 hits in six innings. He is 1-6 with a 6.55 earned-run average in nine starts since the all-star break.
Cleveland 4, Baltimore 1--The Orioles may have the best record in baseball since the all-star break, but their playoff hopes are fading.
Dwight Gooden won his third consecutive decision and Travis Fryman drove in two runs as the Indians won two of three games this weekend at Baltimore.
The loss dropped the Orioles eight games behind Boston for the AL wild-card spot.
Kansas City 11, Tampa Bay 5--The game between the Royals and Devil Rays turned into the Sal Fasano show, as the Royal catcher went four for four and the Royals won at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Fasano had a homer and three RBIs as the Royals earned their fourth consecutive victory.
