Costco Wholesale of Inglewood has formed a partnership with Bennett-Kew Elementary School to set up a tutoring program and provide every student with a backpack full of supplies, school officials announced.

About 800 backpacks filled with school supplies and snacks were distributed at the school on the first day of classes, said Nancy Ichinaga, the school’s principal.

On Sept. 14, 12 volunteers trained by the store will begin tutoring students one hour a week at the school, which is located at 11710 Cherry Ave.

The effort is part of Costco’s nationwide program to provide tutors to help children who are lagging academically.

“We think the Costco tutorial project is unique, and we are very happy to have been selected as the first school in Inglewood to participate,” said Ichinaga.
