25-Year Injunction in Freeway Case Expires
A federal judge has allowed a 25-year court injunction that prevented the acquisition of land for the Long Beach Freeway extension to expire.
But officials with the city of South Pasadena, which filed the injunction, said the decision by U.S. District Judge William J. Rea amounts to a procedural delay in the case and that the battle is far from over.
In his ruling, Rea said he would not entertain extending the injunction based on the original lawsuit filed in 1973.
The $1.4-billion roadway between the San Bernardino and Foothill freeways that would slice through the eastern portion of Los Angeles, South Pasadena and Pasadena was given the green light by federal transportation officials earlier this year.
South Pasadena officials said they will file a new federal lawsuit asking for another injunction. The city had tried recently to amend its original 1973 suit, a move that would have extended the injunction. But Rea refused such an effort.
South Pasadena officials will file the additions as a separate lawsuit.
