Council Rejects Limits on Election Contributions
City Council members have rejected Mayor Chris Holden’s campaign finance reform plan to limit individual donations to local candidates.
The proposal would have limited contributions to council members to $250. If the city decides in November to have a mayor elected by voters, donations would have been limited to $1,000.
The plan never even made it to a formal vote Monday night. Four of the council’s seven members said campaign reform was not needed. Councilman Paul Little said that corrupt politicians will be corrupt regardless of the size of donations.
“The issue isn’t the money but the individual at the receiving end of it,” Little said.
Little was joined by council members William Crowfoot, Ann-Marie Villicana and Joyce Streator.
The proposal was drafted by a council subcommittee composed of Holden, William Paparian and Sidney F. Tyler Jr.
