Cyclist Hit, Killed on Pacific Coast Highway

A bicyclist was hit and killed and another was injured early Tuesday morning by a man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

Lawrence Martin Hilbert, 56, of Long Beach and Stephen Robertson, 50, of Los Alamitos were riding bicycles south on Pacific Coast Highway near Phillips Street at 6:19 a.m. when a car hit them, police said.

Hilbert, who was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived, died at the scene. Robertson suffered broken bones and facial cuts. He was in good condition Tuesday afternoon at Long Beach Community Medical Center.

The driver, Michael Arthur Roth, 50, of Long Beach, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was booked into Orange County Jail, and bail was set at $250,000.

Police do not know if the bicyclists were hit in the bicycle lane or in the road, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
