Santa Claus let his reindeer rest for next week and hopped aboard an antique firetruck Thursday morning to help firefighters deliver food donations to Food Share.

Santa arrived at the county Food Bank at 4156 N. South Bank Road with frozen turkeys donated by members of the Fire Department and residents.

With a team of volunteers and food drive coordinator Sheriff Bob Brooks assisting, Santa helped unload turkeys into a bin filled with boxes of instant mashed potatoes, stuffing and cans of vegetables.

Food Share is a nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers who collect food for more than 200 agencies within the county. With the organization’s help, more than 3,300 people receive food each month.

Food Share last year delivered 7 million pounds of food to families throughout Ventura County. This year, the organization needs 8,000 more pounds by Dec. 24 to reach its goal of 75,000 pounds of food, according to Executive Director Jim Mangis.
