Dorothea Scott; Simi Valley Resident

Simi Valley resident Dorothea Eviston Scott died Dec. 12 at a hospital after a long illness. She was 79.

Scott was born Oct. 9, 1919, in East Orange, N.J., to Albert and Olga Eviston. Scott graduated from high school at Mount St. Dominic’s Academy in New Jersey and attended two years of business school.

She worked for a short time as a machinist at an aircraft assembly plant in New Jersey before marrying Fletcher T. Scott. Scott lived in Tarzana, Woodland Hills and San Clemente before settling in Simi Valley in 1986 after the death of her husband.

Scott also was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Fletcher Scott.

Scott was active with the California Republican Party and the Catholic Church.

Scott is survived by her son, Laurence Scott of Simi Valley; two brothers, James Eviston of Tawas City, Mich., and Charles Eviston of Cleveland, Ohio; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

There will be a viewing at 9 a.m. today at Saddleback Mortuary’s chapel in Tustin, followed by a service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest.

Ian J.W. MacHattie; Research Scientist

Ventura resident Ian J.W. MacHattie died Thursday at home. He was 86.

MacHattie was born in Goderich, Ontario, Canada. He earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Toronto and was a Fellow of the Ontario Research Foundation for 11 years.

He and his wife, M. Gabrielle MacHattie, moved to Des Plaines, Ill., in 1946. MacHattie was a research scientist at Ekco Products for 30 years and retired in 1977 as director of research.

At Ekco, MacHattie pioneered research in electropolishing, electroplating and water pollution control, his family said.

In Des Plaines, he was one of the founders of St. Martin Episcopal Church.

MacHattie and his wife moved to Ventura in 1977, where he served on the vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the church’s outreach and stewardship committee.

MacHattie is survived by his wife, M. Gabrielle MacHattie of Ventura; three daughters, Elspeth MacHattie of Denver, Colo., Susan Iverson of Lawrence, Kan., and Jane Lambert of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; a brother, Frederick MacHattie of Victoria, B.C.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ventura.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Assn. in Ventura.
