Capitalizing on the current popularity of a once-scorned art, a new exhibit re-creates a World War II-era Norfolk tattoo parlor that drew thousands of sailors.

“Skin Deep: The Art of the Tattoo” runs through March 30, 1999, at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News. It includes a re-creation of Cap’n A.B. Coleman’s tattoo shop, which flourished in the 1940s before being chased out of town during efforts to clean up Norfolk’s red-light district.

Another section, on modern pop culture, displays video clips of people talking about why they got their tattoos and posters from movies such as “The Illustrated Man.” In all, there are more than 500 images and artifacts.
