Louisiana State has no plans for an in-depth investigation of rumors that players gambled on games last fall because there is no truth to them. “As of this moment, we haven’t been able to confirm that any of these rumors are true,” Chancellor William Jenkins said. “We haven’t uncovered one shred of evidence that this is true.” Athletic Director Joe Dean said players had been questioned, but he refused to identify them. Jenkins said the university has talked to local, state and federal law enforcement, including the FBI, district attorney and state attorney general. None was investigating the rumors, he said.

The passing of Louisville’s Chris Redman and Marshall’s Chad Pennington should produce a high-scoring Motor City Bowl game tonight in Pontiac, Mich. Redman has passed for 4,042 yards and 29 touchdowns. Pennington threw for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns. . . . Utah offensive coordinator Tommy Lee and his brother, St. Louis School offensive coordinator Ron Lee, have rejected offers to join the staff of new Hawaii Coach June Jones.
