Freeway Ramps Closed as Police Round Up Horses

There was a whole lot of horseplay going on Saturday when a herd of horses escaped from stables for an early-morning run along Riverside Drive, police said.

About 30 horses broke free from the Circle K Riding Stables in the 900 block of Mariposa Street, said Sgt. Mike Keeffe of the Burbank Police Department. The horses were spotted at 2:45 a.m. by a resident who called police.

About 10 officers spent an hour rounding up the horses at several locations along Riverside, including Johnny Carson Park, Keystone Street, Valleyheart Drive and the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, he said. Police closed the Ventura Freeway ramps at Riverside and Buena Vista Street as a precaution.

“Something like this happens periodically in the area,” Keeffe said, “because it is an area where horses are boarded.”

The stable owner was contacted and there was no indication that the horses were deliberately released, he said. All of the horses were returned to the stable.
