Tipsy Drivers Can Get a Ride on New Year’s

Share

To keep motorists safe during New Year’s celebrations, the Automobile Club of Southern California is offering drunk drivers--and their cars--safe rides home through its “Tipsy Tow” program.

From 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day, drivers can get their cars towed by dialing (800) 400-4AAA.

“New Year’s [has] traditionally the highest number of drunk-driving arrests and [alcohol]-related accidents,” said Sgt. Peter Charbonneau of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s office for Lost Hills and Malibu.

In the past five years, an estimated 153 people have been killed or injured statewide in alcohol-related accidents each day of the New Year’s holiday, according to an Automobile Club news release.

The group figures 400 to 500 people will be injured or killed in alcohol-related crashes during the coming New Year’s holiday weekend.

There are some “Tipsy Tow” restrictions:

* The service only gives a ride to the driver, not the passengers.

* The one-way ride will only go to the driver’s home.

* The first seven miles of towing are free; drivers are charged the towing company’s rate for additional miles.

* No advance reservations for the service will be accepted.
