Team Pays Penalty, Gives Ottawa a Boost

The Ducks couldn’t seem to stay out of the penalty box Monday against the Ottawa Senators, which was one reason why they were caught in the final seconds of regulation in a 2-2 tie.

The Ducks gave Ottawa four power plays in the second period, setting up one terrific scoring chance after another for the Senators. But the Ducks kept themselves off balance during the all-too-brief moments when the teams played at even strength.

“My legs were a little cold,” said right wing Teemu Selanne, who doesn’t play on the Ducks’ penalty-killing unit.

“Those penalties gave them all the momentum,” left wing Paul Kariya said. “Especially on the road, you can’t give the other team’s power play all those chances. We didn’t play our game. We sat back and gave them power plays.”

Defenseman Jason Marshall missed his third consecutive game because of a hamstring injury. He has resumed skating, participating in a few drills during practices. But he’s not expected to play Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“He can’t do sprints yet,” Coach Craig Hartsburg said of Marshall, who was injured when he crashed into the boards Dec. 18.
