Flyers Beat Flames in Overtime Despite Losing Lindros, Dykhuis

Valeri Zelepukin scored 1:57 into overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers, despite second-period injuries to Eric Lindros and Karl Dykhuis, battled back from a two-goal deficit to beat the Calgary Flames, 4-3, Tuesday night in Calgary, Canada.

Zelepukin took the puck over the Calgary blue line, cut to his left and beat Andrei Trefilov high on the blocker side from the top of the faceoff circle.

Lindros was hit twice on the same shift along the side boards with six minutes left in the second period and did not return. He was first knocked to the ice in trying to avoid a hit by Steve Smith. Seconds later, he was knocked into the boards heavily by Jason Wiemer, who was assessed a charging penalty. Lindros’ status was not immediately known.

Dykhuis, making his debut with Philadelphia after being acquired Monday from Tampa Bay in exchange for Petr Svoboda, got either a stick or the puck in the face following a faceoff in the final minute of the second period.

Montreal 5, Edmonton 2--Mark Recchi ended a career-worst 18-game drought without taking a shot and ended up with two goals to lead the Canadiens in Edmonton, Canada. On a delayed tripping penalty against Recchi, Oiler defenseman Janne Niinimaa banked a pass off the boards that slid the length of the ice and into the unoccupied Edmonton net with goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov on the bench for an extra attacker. Recchi was given credit for the goal at 5:56 of the first period because he was the last Montreal player to touch the puck.

Tampa Bay 3, N.Y. Islanders 0--Vincent Lecavalier had a spectacular second-period goal and Bill Ranford stopped 35 shots as the Lightning ended a nine-game home losing streak.

Lecavalier, this year’s first overall draft pick, broke a scoreless tie with his sixth goal at 6:43 of the second.

He split the defense near the blue line and then put a shot between goalie Marcel Cousineau’s pads while being pulled down from behind by New York defenseman Zdeno Chara.

Colorado 4, Vancouver 2--Valeri Kamensky had a goal, ending a 15-game scoring drought, and added two assists and the Avalanche beat the Canucks in a fight-filled game in Vancouver, Canada.

Colorado won for only the third time in its last nine games (3-5-1).
