For the second consecutive year, KCBS-TV Channel 2 was the big winner in broadcasting’s 1997 Golden Mike Awards, winning 14 honors, including the prize for best daytime news show, during the 48th annual ceremonies Saturday at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

San Diego’s NBC affiliate, NBC4-TV, finished second in Division I with seven awards, while KNBC-TV Channel 4 of Los Angeles won the coveted award for best 30-minute evening newscast. KTLA-TV Channel 5 took home the prize for the best 60-minute evening news.

“It’s a tribute to the work being done by producers, reporters, writers and photographers,” said KCBS Managing Editor Pat Casey of his news team’s honors. “We’re finding stories that matter, and we’re telling them in a compelling way. It’s very gratifying.”

In Division II, Spanish-language station KVEA-TV Channel 52, which recently completed a major overhaul of its twice-nightly news program, won for best 30-minute newscast. In was the third straight win for the station in that category. KVEA also won nine other awards, including four for its coverage of last February’s deadly North Hollywood bank robbery.

Spanish-language KMEX-TV Channel 34 won seven Division II awards, one more than public television’s KCET-TV Channel 28.

In radio, KNX-AM (1070) won 10 awards, one more than rival KFWB-AM (980), but KFWB grabbed the major prize in that division, winning honors for best news broadcast of more than 15 minutes.

In Division II, the radio newscast award went to Cal State Northridge’s tiny KCSN-FM (88.5), in one of four honors the station earned.

The Golden Mikes are presented annually by the Radio and Television News Assn. of Southern California to recognize excellence in local broadcast news coverage.
