Fatally Wounded Man Hits Pole

A car driven by a 21-year-old North Hollywood man suffering from a fatal gunshot wound plowed into a traffic signal pole Monday night.

The victim, identified by Los Angeles police as Arnulfo Murillo, died at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills later that night.

LAPD Det. Vince Bancroft said Murillo was shot once in the chest while standing outside his car, which was parked on Kentucky Avenue. Residents of the area told police that they heard gunshots, but that by the time they sighted Murillo, he was getting into his car and driving away.

He drove half a block and turned north on Lankershim Boulevard until he reached Ventura Boulevard. There Murillo lost control of the car, crossed the southbound lanes and crashed into the pole, snapping it in two, Bancroft said.

“This killing doesn’t appear gang related,” Bancroft said, adding that there was “no indication of a drive-by shooting.”

Police had not determined the motive for the shooting and had no eyewitnesses or suspects, he said.
