The Los Angeles County district attorney filed criminal charges against Redondo Beach City Clerk John Oliver on Wednesday, accusing him of violating the state vehicle code by forging a license plate registration tab on a van that he owned.

Oliver’s Ford van was discovered with the allegedly forged 1997 registration sticker on Oct. 27 by Redondo Beach police during a traffic enforcement patrol near Redondo Union High School. The police and the Department of Motor Vehicles conducted the investigation that led to the charge.

Oliver, 49, has been charged with one felony count of violating the vehicle code. He is scheduled to enter a plea Feb. 11 in Los Angeles Municipal Court, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Goul. If convicted, Oliver could face a maximum sentence of three years in state prison.
