Backup goaltender Roman Turek stopped 26 shots for his first career shutout and Pat Verbeek scored a power-play goal as the Dallas Stars beat the struggling Philadelphia Flyers, 1-0, Wednesday night at Dallas.

Turek, getting the start with Ed Belfour scratched because of a sore back, won for the eighth time this season to extend the Flyers’ losing streak to four games, their longest since March 26-31, 1994.

The shutout was the eighth for the Stars this season, a club record, and the fifth at home, also a franchise mark.

Washington 2, Pittsburgh 2--Not even a brilliant 34-save performance could save Capital goaltender Olaf Kolzig from kicking himself.

“You can’t allow those cheesy goals,” Kolzig said after Chris Ferraro’s third-period goal gave the Penguins a tie at Pittsburgh.

Kolzig was kicking himself after Ferraro scored off a rebound at 7:15 of the third period to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.

Andrew Brunette scored the tying goal with 5:51 left in the third period.

New Jersey 2, Ottawa 0--Martin Brodeur made 19 saves as the Devils shut out the visiting Senators for the second time in three days.

Brodeur, who leads all goalies with 31 wins (31-11-4), recorded his sixth shutout of the season and 28th of his career.

Toronto 3, St. Louis 2--Fredrik Modin scored the winning goal with 6:25 left at Toronto as the Maple Leafs ended a four-game losing streak with the victory over the Blues.

Modin took a weak shot from just inside the blue line that deflected off the chest of St. Louis goaltender Grant Fuhr before bouncing over his shoulder and into the net.

N.Y. Islanders 4, Montreal 2--Bryan Smolinski broke a tie at 10:48 of the third period and the Islanders won at Uniondale, N.Y. to extend their unbeaten streak to five games.

Mike Hough clinched the victory with a goal at 14:43 on a wrist shot off Canadien goalie Andy Moog’s arm.

San Jose 3, Edmonton 0--Mike Vernon made 21 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the Sharks beat the Oilers at Edmonton.

Patrick Marleau, Shawn Burr and Stephane Matteau scored for the Sharks.

Edmonton did not get a shot on Vernon until nearly 11 minutes into the second period. It was Vernon’s first shutout against the Oilers.

Tampa Bay 3, Carolina 3--The Lightning’s club-record 13-game losing streak ended, but Tampa Bay blew a two-goal lead and had to settle for a tie at Greensboro, N.C.

Jeff O’Neill capped the Hurricanes’ comeback by shoving a rebound underneath Mark Fitzpatrick with 1:49 left in regulation, dropping the Lightning to 0-13-2 in its last 15 games.

Boston 2, Buffalo 2--Trailing by a goal in the final two minutes, the Sabres were happy to come away with a tie against the Bruins at Buffalo.

Michael Peca scored off a rebound with 1:20 left in regulation as the Sabres extended their unbeaten streak to seven games.

Dimitri Khristich gave the Bruins a one-goal lead with 4:09 remaining in the third with a wrist shot that went off Dominik Hasek and into the air before falling off the goaltender’s head and into the net.

NHL Notes

After the game, Buffalo traded left wing Brad May and a third-round draft pick in 1999 to Vancouver for left wing Geoff Sanderson. . . . Elimination of the red line was among the rule changes backed by NHL general managers after three days of meetings to discuss ways to improve the flow of play. They can’t implement changes, only recommend them.
