With a victory tonight, the Waves can move within half a game of first place in the West Coast Conference. Pepperdine’s surge has coincided with the improved play of guard Jelani Gardner, averaging 17.9 points and a conference-best seven assists in WCC games. Starting forward Kelvin Gibbs, who sat out most of Saturday’s game because of a respiratory illness, is expected to play. Last-place San Diego has beaten the Waves the last three times at home. Torero forward Brian Miles ranks third among WCC players in scoring, averaging 17.6 points, and is first in field-goal percentage (65.3%) and three-point percentage (53.8%).
