Giuliana Mendiola Scores 35 as El Toro Wins in Overtime

Giuliana Mendiola, the county’s leading scorer, had 35 points to lead eighth-ranked El Toro to a 64-55 victory over visiting Santa Margarita on Thursday.

Mendiola scored all 14 points in overtime as El Toro improved to 22-2, 8-0 in the Sea View League.

Santa Margarita (13-10, 4-4) forced overtime when Natalie Sanroman hit a three-point basket with 1.7 seconds left in regulation.

In other Sea View League games:

Irvine 59, Woodbridge 56--Jody Carlson scored 21 as the Vaqueros (14-8, 5-3) wiped out a 17-point, first-quarter deficit. Nicole Roberts scored 23 for Woodbridge (13-11, 4-4).

Newport Harbor 37, Corona del Mar 28--Kristen Urban scored 13 for Newport Harbor (7-17, 2-6). Jennifer Dickson led Corona del Mar (4-18, 0-8) with 12 points.

In the Century League:

Canyon 53, Foothill 39--Sara Mohkami scored 11 for Canyon (22-2, 7-1).

El Modena 56, Orange 49--Valerie Matweeff had 19 points, 13 rebounds and five steals for El Modena (11-8, 4-4).

Villa Park 65, Santa Ana Valley 38--Bianca Larson scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Villa Park (16-5, 7-1). Missy Bynon added 13 points and eight rebounds.

In the Empire League:

No. 6 El Dorado 63, Kennedy 51--Stephanie Patten scored 20 points and Jennie Bluth 18 for El Dorado (20-3, 8-0). Cira Wright scored 20 for Kennedy (16-10, 3-5).

Century 52, Cypress 19--Aprile Powell led Century (16-8, 6-2) with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Loara 64, Katella 39--Shawnna Walker (22 points), Carrie Banister (18) and Jessica Miles (14) lifted Loara (14-9, 4-4).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 70, Whittier Christian 27--Christy Ring (18 points 8 assists) and Erica Waetjen (15 points, 10 rebounds) picked up the slack for Cathy Joens (back injury). The Eagles are 19-4, 7-1.

Cerritos Valley Christian 60, Orange Lutheran 38--Allison Smith scored 10 for Orange Lutheran (5-17, 2-6).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 62, Anaheim 21--Monika Jackley scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Valencia (10-14, 5-3). Heather Hoppe added 15 points and six assists.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 55, Estancia 34--Kristin Moorhouse scored a game-high 19 for Aliso Niguel (13-10, 7-1). Francia Diaz led Estancia (14-10, 3-5) with 17 points.

Costa Mesa 52, University 39--Julie Collett scored 13 points and Nancy Hatsushi had seven assists for Costa Mesa (11-3, 7-1). . Fala Suiaunoa scored 15 for University (9-14, 3-4).

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 Capistrano Valley 63, Trabuco Hills 53--Monique Matthews scored 20 points and Natasha Combs added 18 for Capistrano Valley (19-4, 8-0). Suzanne Linn led Trabuco Hills (14-10, 3-5) with 15 points.

No. 4 San Clemente 76, Mission Viejo 27--San Clemente (21-4, 7-1) outscored Mission Viejo in the first quarter, 26-2. The Tritons were 15 of 18 from the free-throw line; Mission Viejo (7-13, 0-8) was three for three.

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Esperanza 69, Huntington Beach 37--Leah Combs (22 points, 10 rebounds) paced Esperanza (17-7, 7-1). Allison Gerber added 16 points. Huntington Beach is 12-13, 3-5.

No. 5 Marina 66, Los Alamitos 35--Nikki Lee scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Chanda McLeod added 16 points and eight rebounds for Marina. Natalie Nakase had 11 assists for the Vikings (20-4, 7-1). Kristin Geoffroy (16 points, 10 rebounds) led Los Alamitos (12-12, 2-6).

Edison 61, Fountain Valley 55--Edison overcame a four-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. Allison Libeu scored 25 and Christina Patterson 15 for the Chargers (21-4, 5-3).
