Patrols in LAX Garages Increased After Attack

Los Angeles International Airport police have beefed up security patrols in parking garages and airport terminals after an attempted rape last week inside a parking structure elevator, airport officials said Thursday.

A woman who was waiting for the elevator in the Terminal 1 parking structure at 10 a.m. last Friday reported that a man yanked her inside the elevator, closed the door and sexually assaulted her, said Los Angeles Police Officer Jason Lee. The man fled when the elevator opened on another floor Lee said.

Airport spokesman Scott Read said there have been no other reports of sexual attacks at the airport. Read said that there were no incidents of rape at the airport in 1997. He said that from 1995 through 1996 there were five rapes, but in each of those cases the victim had known the attacker.
