A Question of Color

I don’t know whether or not Spike Lee is on target regarding the Oscars’ treatment of black artists (“Spike Lee Questions Academy’s Diversity,” by Robert W. Welkos, Feb. 12), but I do think it’s a shame that one of the year’s very best, “Eve’s Bayou,” was left at the academy’s starting gate, not to mention Kasi Lemmons’ moving screenplay and wonderful direction or Debbi Morgan’s spellbinding performance.

My child is a religious viewer of “Entertainment Tonight.” When the Oscar nominations were announced, he turned and asked me, “Do I have to be white to see myself on television?” Are the Oscars like the golf courses that won’t let people of color on without being a guest of a member of the club?
