No Mercy Shown by Northridge

Cal State Northridge busted loose with 27 hits and swept a nonconference softball doubleheader, 10-0, 18-1, over Santa Clara on Friday at Bronco Park in Santa Clara. Both games were halted because of a mercy rule.

Jessica Creith (2-0) allowed four hits and no walks in the first game, striking out one. Tara Glaister (1-0) and Veronica Lopez combined on a two-hitter in the second game.

Ashlie Hayes homered for Northridge (4-1) in the first game, and Jamie Moore, Laura Redding, Augrista Belford and Maryke Don each homered in the second game.

Matador center fielder Lisa Flores was two for two with three runs and two runs batted in in the first game and one for three with two RBIs in the second game.

In other softball games:

Southern California 3-4, Cal Lutheran 0-1--Cal Lutheran pitcher Kathy Proffitt absorbed two losses and the winless Regals (0-4) suffered their ninth and 10th consecutive defeats against Southern California (3-1) in a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

The Regals’ losing streak against Southern California dates back to 1992.

Proffitt (0-3) allowed eight hits in each game. Donna Scott had two hits, including a triple, in the second game. She also doubled in the first game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC San Diego 101, The Master’s 91--Joclin Julmist had 18 points and 19 rebounds for The Master’s in the nonconference game at UC San Diego.

Julmist hit seven of 10 shots from the field, but the Mustangs (18-10) made only 33 of 69. Lincoln Nugent had 20 points and four assists for Master’s.

Mike Wall scored 31 points for UC San Diego (17-5) and teammate Tyler Field had 28 points and 12 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

La Verne 70, Cal Lutheran 63--Missy Rider scored 19 points and Nicole Sanchez had 17 for Cal Lutheran, but the Regals (13-7, 8-1) were upset in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at La Verne.

Three-point shooting was the difference: La Verne (7-14, 2-7) hit nine of 15 and Cal Lutheran’s made only three of nine.

Lori Johnson had 26 points for La Verne.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Stanford 7, Pepperdine 2--Pepperdine’s Angela Lawrence defeated Julie Scott, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, but the 10th-ranked Waves fell in a nonconference match at Stanford.

Pepperdine’s other victory was at No. 2 doubles, where Ipek Senoglu and Karoline Borgersen won, 9-8 (10-8), over fifth-ranked Stanford’s Julie Scott and Ania Bleszynski, a former Harvard-Westlake High standout.

Pomona-Pitzer 9, Cal Lutheran 0--Cal Lutheran’s No. 3 doubles team of Cindy Bear and Alicia Lawson won the only set of the match for the host Regals (1-2, 0-2) in a SCIAC match.

Bear and Veith captured the first set in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 loss to Jessica Veith and Christy Shan.
