91,000 Fans Roar as Mexico Wins, 1-0
It was loud and lively Sunday at the Los Angeles Coliseum as Mexico defeated the United States, 1-0, to claim soccer’s prized CONCACAF Gold Cup. More than 91,000 fans were on hand, most pro-Mexico, many blowing horns with such sustained fervor that it sounded like a huge hornet’s nest inside the venerable stadium. A sprinkling of U.S. fans--including a group that calls itself Sam’s Army--also made noise, hoping the U.S. team could pull off yet another upset. But it was not to be. Mexico’s Luis Hernandez scored on a header in the first half; the U.S. just missed a chance to tie in the second.
