Donations Sought to Help Afghanistan Quake Victims
The Los Angeles chapter of the American Red Cross is appealing for donations to help victims of a recent earthquake in Afghanistan that killed more than 4,000 and injured tens of thousands.
The magnitude-6.1 temblor rocked the northeastern province of Takhar Feb. 4, leaving tens of thousands of people without shelter in sub-zero weather, a Red Cross spokesman said.
The Afghan Red Crescent and the Red Cross have teamed up to coordinate humanitarian aid, said Red Cross spokesman Rick Radillo. Money is needed to transport drinking water and other relief items, he said.
To assist the victims, call (800) HELP NOW. Donations can be sent to the American Red Cross-Los Angeles Chapter, 2700 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90057.
