The Ducks have expressed interest in Buffalo Sabre right wing Matthew Barnaby, an NHL source said. Barnaby has scored three goals and 15 points this season and also has 211 penalty minutes. He would provide the Ducks some of the toughness they lack.

The Ducks are one of three teams that have asked about Barnaby, the source said. Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira would neither confirm nor deny the team’s interest.

The Ducks did as much work as possible during practice Wednesday, considering six of their players are at the Olympics and Paul Kariya is still recovering from a concussion. Only 13 players skated during the two-hour workout.

“It’s a chance to do individual drills and work some new guys in,” Coach Pierre Page said.

Travis Green, acquired in a trade with the New York Islanders on Feb. 6, is tops on the new-guy list.

“He can be a valuable guy,” Page said. “He can score 20-25 goals. Obviously, if he was at that level right now, we wouldn’t have been able to get him. Sometimes getting a fresh start is all it takes.”

With Duck goalies Guy Hebert (U.S.) and Mikhail Shtalenkov (Russia) in Japan, the Ducks had to borrowed two goalies, Igor Galkin from Bakersfield of the Western Professional Hockey League and Derek Puppa from Nashville of the Eastern Professional Hockey League.

Puppa is the brother of Daren Puppa, Tampa Bay’s goaltender.

Page said he will use Shtalenkov, who has helped Russia reach the semifinals, more after the Olympic break. Hebert didn’t play for the United States.

Ferreira said the Ducks will fill out their roster Sunday. He said center Matt Cullen is one of the “two or three players” the team will bring back from its minor league affiliate in Cincinnati.
