Longtime Ventura resident George D. Raymond, a barbershop quartet singer and former owner of several local liquor stores, died Feb. 18 at a Santa Barbara hospital following a brief illness. He was 81.

Born Aug. 8, 1916, in Oak Park, Ill., Raymond lived in Ventura County for 53 years. He ran his own construction business, and owned and operated liquor stores in Ventura, Oxnard, Port Hueneme and El Rio before retiring in 1979.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member of the Ventura Friends Church and, for 46 years, he was with the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.

He was an avid golfer who loved spending time with his family and friends.

Raymond is survived by his daughter, Anna of Ventura; three cousins and five nephews. His wife of 37 years, Mary, died in 1995.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
