Olga Wagner turned 106 years old Feb. 19, sparking a small celebration at the West Alamitos Convalescent Home.

Wagner moved to the center a year ago from the Huntington Park area of Los Angeles, where she worked in a department store and as inspector at a tile factory.

Though set back by two strokes in December, her family said she is doing well. Before the strokes, however, she was sharper and better focused.

“You wouldn’t want to play cards with her, because she’d remember what you played and beat you,” said daughter Gladys Ulrich, 83, of Seal Beach. “She was very alert.”

Wagner also enjoys political discussions, shopping and walking, Ulrich said.

Married in 1912 in her hometown of Sheboygan, Wis., Ulrich and husband Don moved to Southern California in the 1950s with Gladys and son, LuVerne. Don died in 1983; LuVerne in 1968.
