A 43-year-old man was rushed to the hospital with a knife embedded in his face Wednesday evening after he was attacked by two young men who stole his nephew’s bicycle, police said.

Leonel Depaz Ramos of Ventura was listed in serious but stable condition at Ventura County Medical Center, according to a spokeswoman.

Just before 6 p.m., Ramos rode his nephew’s bike to Red Barn Market at 995 Ventura Ave., said Ventura Police Sgt. Larry White. When Ramos came out of the store, he noticed two young men stealing the bike.

He chased the thieves for about 20 yards and confronted them. Then one of the thieves pulled out a knife with a 3- to 4-inch blade and stabbed him five times. Ramos was wounded in the arm and torso before his attackers plunged the knife into his face and fled.

The suspects, described as being in their late teens or early 20s, are being sought on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery.
