A 72-year-old Oxnard man suffered massive injuries Wednesday evening when a car sent him airborne outside St. John’s Regional Medical Center, paramedics said.

Bernardino Villa Miguel was attempting to walk across North Rose Avenue near Socorro Way about 6:35 p.m. when he was struck by a small station wagon, said Steve Carroll, a paramedic supervisor for Gold Coast Ambulance Service. Police identified the woman driving the car as Ruth Mary Hartman, 54, also of Oxnard.

The impact of the crash sent Miguel into the windshield and then into the air before he landed face down on the concrete in front of the hospital’s south entrance.

When Oxnard Fire Department paramedics arrived a few minutes later, Miguel was not breathing, Carroll said. Paramedics were able to revive him before taking him into St. John’s.

Miguel received serious injuries to his head, chest and pelvis, and both of his lower legs were broken, Carroll said. He was listed in critical condition at the hospital, according to a spokeswoman. No other injuries were reported.

Police shut down the southbound lanes of Rose at Gonzales Road for more than two hours as they investigated the crash.
